Yamishibai Season 16 is the 2026 addition to the long-running Japanese horror series. It still uses that creepy “paper puppet” animation style (Kamishibai) that looks like moving cardboard cutouts. The episodes are super short, usually around 4 minutes, and always start with the creepy old man in the yellow mask telling stories to kids at a playground.
The theme for this season is “Conclusion” (or “Ties” in some translations). It focuses on urban legends where things from the past finally catch up to people. It’s directed by Akira Funada, who has been in charge of the show for a few years now. The vibe is very old-school Japanese horror—lots of silence, weird faces, and sudden jump scares.
