Kaya-chan Isn’t Scary (or Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai) is a horror-comedy anime that started airing in January 2026. It’s based on a manga about a kindergarten girl named Kaya who everyone thinks is a troublemaker. In reality, she’s a powerful psychic who sees ghosts and monsters that the adults can’t see. She basically punches these spirits to protect her classmates, but because the teachers just see her hitting “nothing,” she constantly gets in trouble.
The story gets much darker than it looks at first. While it starts out with “ghost of the week” stories at the school, it eventually turns into a big mystery about Kaya’s family, the Ebisumori clan. Her teacher, Chie-sensei, is the only adult who figures out what’s going on and tries to help her. The show is animated by East Fish Studio, and even though the budget isn’t huge, the writing is actually pretty disturbing and covers some heavy topics.
