Journal with Witch (Japanese title: Ikoku Nikki) is one of the biggest "sleeper hits" of the Winter 2026 season. Don't let the name fool you—it's not actually about magic or spell-casting. It's a grounded, "slice-of-life" drama about a 35-year-old novelist named Makio Koudai who takes in her 15-year-old niece, Asa, after a tragic car accident kills Asa's parents.
The "Witch" in the title is more of a metaphor for how Makio lives—she’s a recluse who stays in her own world of books and writing. The story is all about these two strangers learning to live together while dealing with grief. It’s been getting a lot of praise for how it handles "adult" conversations and realistic teenage emotions. The animation by Studio Shuka (the same team behind Natsume’s Book of Friends) is soft and beautiful, making it a very "healing" watch.
