The wait is officially over—the anime adaptation of Nippon Sangoku: The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun literally just premiered yesterday! This is one of the most anticipated shows of the spring season, especially since it’s being handled by Studio Kafka (the team behind The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2) and features a soundtrack by the legendary Kevin Penkin.
The story is a “near-future” take on the Three Kingdoms era. Japan has basically collapsed due to a mix of nuclear war and corrupt politics, splitting into three separate nations fighting for control. We follow Aoteru Misumi, a former low-level bureaucrat who loses everything and decides to reunify the country. He isn’t a fighter, though—he uses “eloquence” and strategy as his main weapons. It’s a very smart, dialogue-heavy political thriller that feels fresh compared to the usual action shonen.
